For the Vail/Beaver Creek Resort skier who has (almost) everything,
what could be better than a lifetime ski pass to these areas?
"Lifetime" passes have been issued
periodically in the past and are now again being offered by Vail Resorts as an incentive to join
the Vail Mountain Club®. According
to the prospectus, these passes will have a total life span of 60 years.
The pass is usable by the original acquirer for that period of time - and/or
that same pass may be transferred one time to a second party.
Estimating the lifetime value of a pass is not particularly difficult. In
2007, the cost of a Vail/Beaver Creek adult season pass was roughly $1,800. If one
assumes a "lifetime" pass might be used successively for perhaps 40
years by an individual, and further assuming an annual 5% increase in the cost
of season passes, 20 years from now a single season adult pass at Vail might be
roughly $5,000.
So over the hypothetical 40 year life of the original issuance, its total
worth could be in the range of $200,000. If that pass was an initial issue
type - that is, not previously held by another person - this pass could then be transferred to a second party, giving the total
worth of the
pass perhaps an additional 50% more value over the entire 60 years of its total lifespan.
Lifetime passes can be transferred under certain conditions from the original
holder. While present rules suggest they may not be sold, other options
may exist to make exchanges or reassignments possible.
